Why Surat business owners need ecommerce now

Surat has strong textile, diamond, and manufacturing sectors. Many owners still sell through WhatsApp, phone calls, and in-person visits. That works for existing customers, but it doesn't scale and it doesn't bring new customers to you—they have to already know you exist.

An ecommerce store changes that. A customer in Delhi or Mumbai can find you on Google, see your products, and buy at 11 PM on a Sunday. You get sales while you sleep. You also get data: what products sell, where your customers come from, what they abandon in their cart.

But "ecommerce store" is vague. A Shopify store costs nothing upfront. A custom-built platform costs ₹2,50,000 to ₹10,00,000+. Both are ecommerce stores. The difference is in what you're really paying for.

Platform choices and what they cost

Start here. Platform choice locks in your costs for years.

Shopify (SaaS platform)

Monthly cost: ₹2,900 to ₹15,000 per month (basic to premium plan).

Setup: You can do it yourself in a day or hire someone to set it up for ₹15,000 to ₹40,000.

Good for: Fast launch, low technical risk, monthly billing (easier to predict costs). You own your data and can leave anytime.

Bad for: Monthly fees add up (₹35,000–₹1,80,000 per year). Limited customization without paying extra. Transaction fees if you use Shopify Payments (~2.9%).

WooCommerce (WordPress plugin)

Setup cost: ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 depending on features.

Monthly cost: Hosting (₹300–₹2,000), SSL (₹500–₹2,000 annually), maintenance, backups. Total: ₹1,500–₹5,000 per month.

Good for: More control, cheaper long-term, integrates with payment gateways like Razorpay and UPI easily.

Bad for: Requires basic technical knowledge or hiring someone to maintain it. Security is your responsibility. Performance depends on your hosting.

Custom-built platform

Setup cost: ₹3,00,000 to ₹15,00,000+.

Time: 2–6 months for a solid store.

Monthly cost: Hosting (₹2,000–₹10,000), updates, maintenance (₹10,000–₹50,000 per month depending on complexity).

Good for: Exactly what you need, no bloat, can scale with your business. Competitive advantage if your store does something competitors can't.

Bad for: Slow launch, expensive, entirely dependent on the developer. If they disappear, you're stuck.

The three types of developers you can hire

Freelancers (Upwork, Fiverr, local networks)

Cost: ₹30,000–₹3,00,000 for a full store.

Timeline: 4–12 weeks, but often slower.

Reality: Highly variable. Some are excellent. Many are not. Communication problems are common (time zones, language, commitment). If they disappear after launch, you have no recourse.

Good for: Very small budgets, simple Shopify or WooCommerce stores, if you vet them carefully.

Small local agencies (5–15 people)

Cost: ₹1,50,000–₹5,00,000 for a full custom or semi-custom store.

Timeline: 6–12 weeks.

Reality: You know where they are. They can visit your office. They're usually cheaper than big agencies. But they often stretch timelines and may lack specialization in ecommerce.

Good for: Most Surat businesses. You get accountability and local support at reasonable cost.

Established agencies (20+ people, portfolio)

Cost: ₹4,00,000–₹20,00,000+ for a full platform.

Timeline: 8–16 weeks, usually predictable.

Reality: They have process. They've built dozens of stores. They offer support and maintenance. But you're paying for brand and overhead. They may not care about small issues after launch.

Good for: Large inventory (1,000+ SKUs), complex fulfillment, high sales volume, if budget allows.

What's actually included in the price

This is where most owners get confused. Ask any developer: "What does this cost cover?" Most will give a vague answer. Push for clarity.

  • Store setup: Domain, SSL certificate, hosting, basic theme/design.
  • Product pages: How many? 50? 500? ₹500 per product is not uncommon if done manually.
  • Payment gateway integration: Razorpay, Instamojo, etc. Usually ₹5,000–₹20,000. UPI integration often costs extra.
  • Shipping integration: Does it connect to Delhivery, Shiprocket? That's extra. ₹10,000–₹30,000.
  • Admin panel: Can you manage inventory, orders, customers from a dashboard? It should be included but ask.
  • Email setup: Transactional emails (order confirmations, shipping updates). Verify this works.
  • SEO setup: Basic on-page SEO, sitemap, meta tags. "SEO" as a separate ₹30,000 add-on is usually not worth it at launch.
  • Support: How many months of free support? After that, what's the cost? ₹5,000–₹15,000 per month is typical for active maintenance.
  • Revisions: Design revisions, content changes before launch. Get a number. "Unlimited" is not realistic.

Get a written breakdown. If they won't give one, move on.

Red flags to watch

"We build all sites on [platform]." Good developers recommend platforms based on your business, not their preference.

No examples of actual stores they built. Ask to see 3–5 live stores (not just screenshots). Visit them. Try to buy something. Do they load fast? Can you find products easily?

"We can do it cheaper than others." Possibly. Or they're cutting corners. Ask specifically what's different.

"It will cost ₹50,000 total." For what? If they can't itemize, that's a sign they don't know their own process.

"It will be ready in 2 weeks." A proper ecommerce store with payment integration, testing, and content takes at least 4–6 weeks. Faster often means incomplete.

No contract or SLA (Service Level Agreement)." You need something in writing that says what happens if they miss deadlines or the store breaks after launch.

They can't explain how much the site will cost per month to run. They should know hosting, domain, SSL, and support costs by heart.

How to choose the right fit for your business

Step 1: Define what you need. How many products? ₹5,000 in monthly volume or ₹5,00,000? Do you need inventory sync across multiple locations? Will you use WhatsApp for customer service or a help desk? Write this down. It determines cost more than anything else.

Step 2: Pick your platform based on your budget and needs.

  • Budget under ₹1,00,000 total: Shopify or WooCommerce on budget hosting.
  • Budget ₹1,50,000–₹5,00,000: WooCommerce with a good developer, or Shopify with custom integration work.
  • Budget over ₹5,00,000 or very complex needs: Custom-built platform.

Step 3: Find 3–5 developers. Ask them each: "How would you build this store, and what would it cost?" You'll see differences in approach and price immediately.

Step 4: Check references, not just portfolio. Call a business owner whose store they built. Ask: "Did they deliver on time? What happened after launch? Are they still supporting you? Would you recommend them?"

Step 5: Get everything in writing. Scope, timeline, cost, what happens if they miss deadlines, what happens if you need changes, support terms after launch. A one-page agreement is fine, but get it in writing.

Step 6: Plan for ongoing costs. The store launch is not the end. Budget ₹5,000–₹20,000 per month for hosting, maintenance, updates, and support. If a developer says it's free after launch, they either won't actually support it or you'll lose the store in a year.

Ecommerce in Surat is still early. Most textile and manufacturing businesses are just starting. That's your advantage—you can build a solid store now while competitors are still figuring it out. Pick a platform and developer that can actually execute, not just talk, and you'll have a working sales channel in 2–3 months for reasonable cost.
