What You're Actually Paying For

When you hire a digital marketing company, you're not buying a service. You're buying attention, time, and their track record with similar businesses.

Most agencies break their work into these core areas:

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization) — Making your website rank on Google for keywords people search. Takes 3–6 months to show results.
  • Paid ads (Google, Facebook, Instagram) — Pay-per-click campaigns where you only pay when someone clicks your ad.
  • Content creation — Blog posts, videos, social media content, website copy.
  • Social media management — Posting, responding, building audience on Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp Business, etc.
  • Email marketing — Newsletters, automation, lead nurturing.
  • Analytics and reporting — Tracking what's working and what isn't.

Some agencies do all of these. Many specialize in 2–3. Be clear about what you actually need before you talk to anyone.

Typical Service Packages and Pricing

Chennai agencies (and most Indian agencies) work on three pricing models:

1. Monthly Retainer

You pay a fixed fee every month. The agency commits a number of hours or hours per channel. This is most common.

Range: ₹15,000 to ₹2,00,000+ per month, depending on scope.

  • ₹15,000–₹40,000/month: Startups or very small businesses. Basic social media management, maybe simple SEO or 1–2 hours of ad management per week. Often junior staff.
  • ₹40,000–₹1,00,000/month: Mid-market businesses. Dedicated account manager, multi-channel campaigns, content creation, basic reporting. Senior team involvement.
  • ₹1,00,000–₹2,00,000+/month: Larger businesses or competitive industries. Full-service strategy, senior strategist, multiple specialists, regular audits, custom reporting.

This does not usually include ad spend. If you want to run Google Ads or Facebook Ads, that's separate money you give directly to Google or Meta. The agency manages it and takes a commission (5–15%) or charges a flat management fee.

2. Project-Based

You pay for a specific project: a website redesign, an SEO audit, a 3-month campaign launch.

Range: ₹50,000 to ₹5,00,000+ depending on the project.

Common projects:

  • Website SEO audit and optimization plan: ₹30,000–₹75,000
  • Content strategy and creation (12 posts): ₹50,000–₹1,50,000
  • Paid campaign setup and first month management: ₹40,000–₹1,00,000
  • Brand positioning and messaging workshop: ₹1,00,000–₹3,00,000

3. Performance-Based (Rare)

The agency only gets paid (or gets paid more) if they hit specific targets: leads, sales, sign-ups, etc.

Very few agencies in Chennai do pure performance-based work because they can't control the whole sales funnel. If they offer it, they'll usually want a retainer + performance bonus.

The Three Types of Agencies in Chennai

Type 1: Large, Multi-Service Agencies

10–50+ staff. Often based near T. Nagar, Guindy, or Nungambakkam. They do everything: branding, web design, SEO, ads, video production.

Pros: One point of contact. Integrated campaigns. Access to senior strategists. Usually have case studies and proven results.

Cons: Expensive (₹75,000+/month minimum). Your account may be handled by juniors unless you pay top-tier fees. Slower decisions.

Best for: Larger companies, franchise chains, e-commerce brands doing ₹50 lakh+ per year in revenue.

Type 2: Boutique/Specialist Agencies

3–10 people. Often started by an ex-agency employee. Specializes in 1–2 things: SEO, paid ads, content, or social media.

Pros: Deep expertise in their specialty. Faster response. Lower cost (₹20,000–₹60,000/month). You talk to the expert directly.

Cons: Can't do everything. If they focus on SEO, they may not handle ads well. Depends entirely on one or two people's capacity.

Best for: Specific problems ("we need better Google rankings") or smaller budgets (₹50 lakh–₹2 crore revenue).

Type 3: Freelancers and Virtual Teams

Usually 1 person or a small team across multiple cities, working remote. They may be in Chennai but operate nationally.

Pros: Cheapest option (₹10,000–₹30,000/month). Can be very good at one specific skill. Flexible.

Cons: No company structure if they vanish. No backup if they're sick. No accountability. Results vary wildly.

Best for: Tight budgets, very specific short-term projects, or when you already know exactly what you need.

Red Flags and Reality Checks

Guaranteed rankings: If an agency promises "#1 ranking on Google" or "guaranteed first page," they don't understand Google. No one can guarantee rankings. Google controls that algorithm, not agencies. Walk away.

No portfolio or case studies: Ask to see results. A real agency has 3–5 client case studies (even if the client names are redacted). If they can't show you anything, that's a warning sign.

Too cheap to be true: ₹5,000/month for "full digital marketing" is not a service. It's a placeholder. You'll get either ghost work or a junior doing only the easiest tasks.

No clear reporting: Ask how you'll measure results. If they say "we'll send a report," ask what's in it. Real reporting shows: traffic, leads, conversions, ROI, cost per lead, etc. If they're vague, they're not tracking anything.

Lock-in contracts: Reputable agencies don't force you to stay for 12 months. If they do, they're more confident in locking you in than in keeping you satisfied. Ask for month-to-month or 3-month terms.

Your ads are running but you're not seeing leads: The agency runs ads, traffic goes up, but no actual business results. This happens when the website or follow-up process is broken. Not always the agency's fault, but they should tell you this upfront.

How to Evaluate and Choose

Step 1: Define your actual goal. "I want digital marketing" is too vague. Is it website traffic? Lead generation? E-commerce sales? Brand awareness? Brand building? You can only measure success if you know what you're measuring.

Step 2: Set a budget. How much can you spend per month without worrying? Be honest. If it's ₹15,000, say it. If it's ₹1,00,000, say that. This eliminates 90% of wrong matches immediately.

Step 3: Talk to 3–5 agencies. Not 10. Three to five. Ask the same questions. See who listens vs. who pitches.

Step 4: Ask for a sample strategy or audit. Before you pay anything, ask them to do a 30-minute audit of your current situation (website, competitors, current marketing). A good agency will spend 45 minutes thinking and 15 minutes telling you what they see. Pay attention to whether they understand your business or are speaking in buzzwords.

Step 5: Check references. Don't trust testimonials on their website. Ask for two client contact numbers or emails. Call them. Ask: "Did they deliver on what they promised? What took longer than expected? Would you hire them again?"

Step 6: Start small. Don't sign a 12-month contract on your first project. Do a 3-month pilot. See if the work quality, communication, and results match the promise. Then you can commit longer.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  • What's included in the monthly fee, and what costs extra? (Especially: ad spend, content creation, software, design.)
  • Who will be my day-to-day contact? Will I talk to the strategist or a junior account executive?
  • How often will you report on results? Weekly, monthly? What metrics will you track?
  • What's your process for strategy? How do you decide what campaigns to run?
  • Can I end the contract early? What's the notice period?
  • If this isn't working after 3 months, what would we do differently?
  • What tools and platforms do you use? (Ask because you may have to pay for some yourself: HubSpot, Semrush, Airtable, etc.)
  • What are your typical results for clients like me? (They should have a number or range: "Most e-commerce clients see 20–40% increase in ROAS within 3 months," or "Lead cost drops from ₹800 to ₹500 in the first 2 months.")
  • Can you show me a real example of a campaign you ran for a similar business?

The right agency fit isn't always the biggest or the cheapest. It's the one that understands your business, communicates clearly, and is honest about what they can and can't do. Take your time choosing. You'll be working together for months.
