You need more customer inquiries. Someone suggested hiring a digital marketing agency in Bengaluru. Before you call anyone, you want to know: what will this cost? What will I actually get? How do I avoid wasting money?
This is what we learned from talking to hundreds of business owners and from building digital products ourselves.
What Bengaluru agencies actually charge
Most agencies don't publish prices. They say "it depends on your goals." That's true—but it's also how they avoid commitment. Here's what you'll actually encounter.
Retainer model (most common): You pay a fixed fee each month (₹25,000 to ₹5,00,000+) for a defined scope of work. SEO might be ₹40,000–₹80,000/month for a small business. Social media management: ₹30,000–₹150,000/month. PPC (Google Ads, Facebook Ads): ₹50,000–₹2,00,000/month plus your ad spend.
Project-based pricing: You pay a one-time fee for a specific output—a website redesign, a brand audit, a campaign launch. Range: ₹1,00,000 to ₹10,00,000. Less common for ongoing work.
Performance-based pricing: You pay based on results—like a percentage of sales from their campaigns, or payment only if they hit lead targets. Rare in Bengaluru, and often a trap. Avoid unless the agency has built your category before.
Ad spend passthrough: When an agency runs your Google or Facebook ads, they charge the platform directly, then add a management fee (10–25% of your ad budget). If you spend ₹2,00,000/month on ads, expect to pay ₹20,000–₹50,000 extra for management.
Most agencies in Bengaluru work on retainer. You pay ₹50,000–₹150,000/month for basic services from a small agency, or ₹2,00,000–₹8,00,000+ for a larger firm with a dedicated team.
Common service models and what they cost
SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Getting your website to rank on Google for keywords people search. Timeline: 3–12 months to see real traffic. Cost: ₹35,000–₹100,000/month for a medium-sized business. What you get: keyword research, content strategy, technical audits, link building, monthly reporting. Honest agencies will tell you it takes time. Anyone promising rank 1 in 30 days is lying.
Paid Ads (Google Ads, Meta Ads): You pay Google or Meta to show ads to people searching or scrolling. The agency sets up campaigns, chooses keywords or audiences, writes ad copy, and optimizes. Cost: your ad budget (₹50,000–₹5,00,000/month) plus agency fee (₹15,000–₹100,000/month). Faster results than SEO (days to weeks), but you pay as long as ads run. A good agency will show you cost per lead or cost per sale.
Social Media Management: Creating posts, managing comments, community building on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp. Cost: ₹25,000–₹80,000/month for 2–3 posts per week plus engagement. Results are soft—awareness, followers, sentiment. Hard to measure ROI unless you're selling direct on social.
Content Marketing: Blog posts, videos, whitepapers, case studies. Usually packaged with SEO. Cost: ₹40,000–₹150,000/month for 2–4 pieces per month. Slow payoff but builds authority.
Email Marketing: Newsletter setup, campaign design, list growth. Cost: ₹10,000–₹40,000/month. Often combined with social or SEO. Good ROI if you have a customer list already.
Website + Strategy Bundle: New website + 3 months of SEO/ads. Cost: ₹2,50,000–₹10,00,000. Common for new businesses.
Red flags to watch for
- No clear deliverables. "We'll improve your digital presence" means nothing. Ask: what exactly will you do each month? How many pieces of content? How many ad campaigns? If they can't answer in writing, walk.
- Guaranteed results. No one can guarantee Google rank or sales. Anyone who does is either inexperienced or dishonest.
- Long lock-in contracts (18+ months). Standard is 3–6 months. Longer means they know you might want to leave.
- Pricing "call for quote" with no transparency. You should know ballpark cost before a call. If every quote is custom, they're hiding pricing power imbalances.
- They want to manage your ad accounts. Many agencies take over your Google Ads or Meta accounts and don't give you access. This is leverage to keep you paying. Demand that your account stays in your name with agency as editor only.
- No reporting or analytics. Ask: how often will I see reports? What metrics matter for my business? If they say "we'll send a report" with no detail, that's a bad sign.
- They bad-mouth previous clients or competitors.** Professionals don't. Unprofessional ones do.
How to run a fair selection process
Step 1: Write a brief. Before calling anyone, write one page about your business: revenue target, product/service, where customers are now, budget (approx), and timeline. This forces clarity on your end and gives agencies real information.
Step 2: Talk to 3–5 agencies. Get quotes in writing. Compare scope, not just price. A ₹40,000 retainer might give you one channel (say, SEO). A ₹80,000 one might cover SEO + social. Ask the same questions of each.
Step 3: Check references. Ask for 2–3 clients in your category (restaurants, e-commerce, B2B SaaS, etc.). Call them. Ask: Did the agency hit the goals? Was communication honest? Did costs creep up? Would you rehire? These conversations are worth their weight in rupees.
Step 4: Start small. Even if an agency seems great, sign a 3-month contract, not 12. Set clear wins for month 1 (e.g., 20 qualified leads, 50% increase in website traffic). Review. Then extend if it's working.
Step 5: Demand transparency. Your account login (Google Ads, Google Analytics, social profiles) should be in your name. You own your data. The agency should have read/write access, not ownership. Before signing, confirm this in writing.
When to hire an agency vs. hire in-house
Hire an agency if:
- You need multiple channels (SEO + ads + social) and don't have the budget for two full-time hires (₹4,00,000–₹8,00,000/year each).
- You want expertise without onboarding risk. An agency brings tools, process, templates.
- You have ₹50,000–₹2,00,000/month to spend. Below ₹30,000, most agencies won't care about you. Above ₹3,00,000, you might as well hire in-house and own the work.
- You're testing a channel before committing full-time staff.
Hire in-house if:
- You're doing this for years and your marketing needs are stable.
- You have ₹2,00,000+/month budget. Cost of one in-house person is often lower than two agency retainers over 2+ years.
- You're in a specialized niche where continuity of brand voice matters (luxury, healthcare, fintech).
- You want complete control and no vendor lock-in.
Reality check: Most businesses should mix both. Hire one in-house person (content, strategy) and outsource one channel (like paid ads) to an agency. This gives you control and specialized firepower without overpaying.
Pricing by agency size in Bengaluru
Solo freelancer or two-person shop: ₹20,000–₹60,000/month. Good for one channel (SEO or ads), low overhead, can be very good or very flaky.
5–15 person agency: ₹50,000–₹2,50,000/month. Most common. Mix of specialists, better process, reasonable prices.
20+ person agency or established brand: ₹2,00,000–₹8,00,000+/month. Polished process, account managers, creative teams, full-service. Sometimes worth it, often overhead you don't need.
Bigger doesn't mean better. A five-person agency with deep experience in your category beats a 50-person generalist every time.
The one question that separates good agencies from bad
Ask this in your first call: "What's an example of a campaign you did where the numbers didn't work, and what did you change?" Every agency has failures. Honest ones talk about them. Ones that don't—or pivot to selling you something else—are hiding something.
Budget ₹50,000–₹150,000/month, commit to 3 months, check three references, and keep your account in your name. That's the framework. Rest is execution.
